Video Compression and Distribution

ITDev is involved with the design and evaluation of both software and hardware based video codecs. We are familiar with a wide range of applications such as:

  • Lossless digital archiving
  • High quality, ultra low latency contribution and distribution systems
  • High performance broadcast encoders

Video Standards

We have been actively involved in a large number of video related projects, where we have successfully demonstrated our in-depth understanding of the following standards:

  • H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC
  • MPEG-2
  • JPEG 2000 (including ultra low latency implementations)
  • AVC-I (including ultra low latency implementations)
  • Dolby 3D Frame Compatible Open Standard
  • 720p / 1080i / 1080p HD video formats

High Definition, High Quality, Low Bit Rate Video

ITDev have a wealth of experience with the latest encoder designs, providing outstanding video quality at reduced bit rates. We have experience in optimising quality for human perception as well as PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise-Ratio). We have also been involved in the development and evaluation of Rate Distortion Optimisation (RDO) and rate control algorithms for both intra-frame only encoders, as well as group-of-pictures (GOP) type codecs.

Working with high definition video requires knowledge of the latest hardware devices and high frequency techniques in order to sustain the high data bandwidths necessary for high definition video.

One of the major projects ITDev has recently been involved with is a hardware implementation of an H.264 real-time encoder for HD video. This required a thorough understanding of the relevant specifications during the design phase, and we undertook extensive simulation and verification against the specification in the testing phase.

Video Conferencing Client Development

Video Conferencing

ITDev was involved in developing a de-centralised multi-point video conferencing solution. This project involved interfacing with the client as well as an OEM software manufacturer in the USA in order to significantly improve the product quality. ITDev's consultants helped to resolve many bugs with the system and our input led to significant improvements to the user interface.

Multi-channel Audio

The latest video standards nominally support up to 16 audio channels. ITDev was involved in designing and implementing a system to synchronise 16 audio streams with a high definition video stream in order to create the highest quality audio-visual experience possible.
