 On 7th March, ITDev once again brought together peers and associates from over 20 companies to discuss Continuous Integration (CI). As part of the event, we were delighted to host presentations from CBNL, Roke Manor, Siemens Mobility as well as ITDev.

We know from engagement with our clients that the understanding and use of CI varies greatly; our CI workshop programme is designed to aid in the adoption and exploitation of CI methodologies. Our latest event took place at Axis, Southampton Science Park's flagship exhibition and conference venue where we welcomed 37 attendees.

David Hoslett, Senior Firmware Engineer from Siemens kick-started the day with a presentation on Siemens Mobility's CI journey, followed by Davide Fiorentino, Principal DevOps and Build Engineer from Cambridge Broadband Networks Limited (CBNL). Davide challenged the audience to envisage the scene where they were running Continuous Deployment for their products whilst being on vacation.

During the afternoon, we heard from ITDev's own Head of Software Engineering, Steve Dwyer, who gave a presentation on how ITDev is accelerating the deployment and maintenance of CI using a product we've developed, Accelerate CI, and are now deploying with clients.

The final presentation came from Charles Woolf, Senior Software Engineer from Roke Manor. Charles detailed a project that Roke ran to migrate an on premise CI system to a cloud hosted system, AWS.

As well as listening to the presentations, there were plenty of opportunities to network and engage with industry colleagues. Formal break-out sessions also ensured attendees were able to discuss on a deeper level those areas which were of particular interest to them, depending on their own use of CI. Break-out sessions covered:

  • introducing CI (1 group)
  • cloud-based CI (2 groups)
  • hardware integration (3 groups)

Following the break-out sessions, each group provided feedback to the room, giving examples from their own businesses as well as additional tips and advice, resulting in a high value session.

Feedback from the day has been overwhelmingly positive including the following comments from the attendees:

'It was great to have the opportunity to discuss issues with others';
'I enjoyed comparing experiences with colleagues, gathering ideas and approaches to tackle common problems';
'the range of presentations were interesting and diverse';
'it was useful discussing solutions to similar problems with others'.

Given the success of this event and ITDev's expertise in this area, we will be running a 3rd workshop in October (date and time to be confirmed). If you are interested in hearing more about this event or registering your interest, sign up here:
